From School Strike to Global Stage

Greta Thunberg is an environmental activist who voices the global climate movement. She was born in 2003 in Stockholm, Sweden and was diagnosed with Asperger syndrome. An Asperger person tends to focus deeply on one idea or interest. Climate change became her issue. Since she was eight years old, she decided to become a vegan and refused to travel by airplane. Seeking to make a greater impact, her youth activism began in August 2018. She began a solo school strike outside the Swedish Parliament at the age of 15. She held a handmade sign that, in English, read “School Strike for Climate.” Her modest act sparked the global Fridays for Future movement. It mobilized millions of young people across continents to demand climate action through strikes and protests every Friday.

Thunberg received numerous invitations to speak about climate change. In September 2019, she was invited to the UN climate event in New York. To demonstrate her commitment to sustainability and low-carbon living, she refused to fly there and instead sailed across the Atlantic Ocean in a zero-emissions yacht. Her powerful speech at the summit captured headlines worldwide and cemented her status as a symbol of youth activism. That same year, she addressed the European Parliament, the British Parliament, and various international forums and was named Time magazine’s Person of the Year.

Greta Thunberg continues to use her global platform to call for urgent, science-based climate policies. She emphasizes the need to limit global warming to below 1.5°C and criticizes governments and corporations for what she sees as insufficient efforts.
